Dr Merijn Hemels, DVM
Originally from the Netherlands, Merijn graduated from Utrecht University in early 2025 and joined the PVH team that June. Drawn to New Zealand for its unspoiled nature and welcoming people, she’s found both in abundance here in Canterbury.
As an all-round equine veterinarian, no two days are ever the same — from dentistry and wound care to internal medicine and reproductive work during the breeding season. Merijn enjoys the mix of patients and clients she meets, from backyard ponies to professional racehorses, and finds it deeply rewarding to see both horse and owner leave happy and well.
She values the strong sense of teamwork at PVH, where colleagues regularly share ideas and support one another. “As a young vet, I feel very lucky to be surrounded by such professional, kind people who always have each other’s backs.”
Outside of work, Merijn spends most of her time outdoors — riding, trail running, tramping, and exploring Canterbury’s rugged scenery (with plenty of photo stops along the way).
Merijn believes animal welfare sits at the heart of good veterinary care. “Animals can’t speak for themselves, so it’s our job to recognise when they need our help — and sometimes that means knowing when to let go.”
If she were an animal, she says she’d be a cat: independent, affectionate, and quietly strong.
