Dr Andrew Whiteside, BSc DipSc (Dist) BVSc

Companion Animal Veterinarian

Andrew has been a vet since 1991, bringing more than 35 years of experience to the team. His days are split between surgery in the morning and consulting in the afternoon, and he still finds the same inspiration that first drew him to the profession — fixing animals and giving owners the relief of a successful outcome.

Surgery remains his favourite part of the job. He has a strong interest in orthopaedic and soft-tissue procedures, particularly fracture plating and pinning. He keeps his skills evolving through VIN, professional consults, researching complex cases, and learning from colleagues.

Outside the clinic, Andrew enjoys hang gliding and sailing. At home he shares life with Maggie, a very spoilt dog, and Chester, an ageing, slightly overweight cat who now shows signs of dementia.

Andrew loves working at Prebbleton Veterinary Hospital for its independence, its blend of modern technology and old-school practice feel, and a team he describes as both professional and fun. When asked what he wishes more pet owners understood, he says that veterinary medicine is a constantly developing technical field with very expensive equipment to purchase and maintain — but seeing a patient recover and get back to enjoying life makes every bit of it worthwhile.

If Andrew were an animal, he’d choose to be a seagull so he could fly over the coastline and water. He has too many funny and memorable moments at work to count, but one of his favourite places to take Maggie is the coastal walkway to Sumner.
