Dr Andrew Turley, MRCVS

Equine Veterinarian

Originally from Ireland, Andrew grew up on a beef and Thoroughbred stud farm where animals were part of daily life. From a young age, he spent his time hunting, eventing, and working in racing yards to earn a bit of pocket money. Those early years gave him a deep respect for horses and the satisfaction that comes from caring for them. A defining moment came at age 12 when he safely delivered a foal on his own, an experience that sparked his lifelong passion for veterinary medicine.

Today, Andrew is drawn to the complexity and precision of lameness work. With a strong background in performance horses and Thoroughbred racing, he thrives on the challenge of diagnosing and solving problems that directly impact an animal’s comfort and ability. He enjoys the constant evolution of the field and the fact that there’s always something new to learn. As he likes to say, quoting Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll: “Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.”

That balance between textbook knowledge and real-world experience drives his professional growth and approach to veterinary care.

Andrew says one of the best parts of working at Prebbleton Veterinary Hospital is the genuine teamwork. “There’s always someone willing to help, offer advice, or just listen,” he says. “It makes a huge difference in a profession that can be emotionally tough at times. Having supportive leaders and colleagues means I can focus on doing my best work for every patient.”

When he’s not on the road visiting clients, you might find him hiking around Akaroa his favourite spot in Canterbury for its hills, trails, and breathtaking views. A cold pint of Guinness and a good game of rugby are his favourite ways to unwind.
